2.1.1 Introduction

We all have our favourites: a favourite author whose books we like reading again and again, a favourite film-maker, a favourite actor. Each of them has developed a specific personal style which interests us and we enjoy, and the same can be said about travel writers.

We like the style of some writers more than others because we find them fun and entertaining, but they are also informative - giving us the information we want to have – and personal. Travel writers often talk about how they lived through a certain situation and their impressions of people they met and things they’ve seen, anecdote (personal experience), and also relating things that we can relate to in the same way (shared experience).  It’s because they want to share these experiences with us the readers and the way in which they do this is how we learn to enjoy their style.

The purpose of this second block in our project is to highlight some examples of these characteristics of travel writing and give some tips on how you can try to do the same things in your work.  The following extracts can help us start.
